What You Leave Behind

Today’s entry title is actually from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

June is almost over, and with it, my online course. For those of you just joining my readership, I have been taking an online physics course through SUNY Oneonta. It runs from late May to late June, and I’ve handed in the first draft of my final paper. I’ve got my fingers crossed for a really good grade in this course, preferably an A or a B+, either of which would be unheard of for me in a conventional science classroom. History and English are my fortes, Sciences and Math are the banes o’ my existence.

My sources, and a good reporter ne’er reveals their sources, tell me that the incoming freshman class is around three or four hundred students. Maybe one or two will read this blog; I think that these blogs are a great way to get to know Hartwick and its students. So let me turn this blog into a jumping-on point. Ahem:

My name is Nico Meyering, and this is my blog. I’m a History Education major here at Hartwick College. I’ve been blogging since I was a sophomore, and I’m about to enter my senior year. My thesis for history looks at the cultural history of comic books, and how they reflected and continue to reflect political attitudes of the time. I’m having a great time doing research (reading comic books) because I’m a huge fan and my collection always grows. I currently serve as the Vice-President of Hartwick College Student Senate, I’m a columnist for the Hilltops newspaper, I serve as treasurer for the Hartwick Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, which is a History honor society. When I’m not in class, at a meeting, or eating, I can be found in Clark Hall’s Writing Center, where I tutor fellow students.

I’m passionate and outspoken, especially about politics and about Oneonta itself. See, I grew up here. I went to Center Street school for elementary school. I graduated from Oneonta High School in 2006. Call me biased, but I know of no other town which is so intimate, fascinating, diverse, and interesting. I’m very concerned about how Oneonta’s local businesses on Main Street can flourish; keep in mind that over ninety percent of small businesses fail within their first year.

In my blog, I’ll usually write about one of three things:
1) Politics, whether at the local, state, national, or international level
2) Oneonta/Hartwick
3) My daily triumphs, challenges, obstacles, missions, objectives, goals, failures, and the like

One and all, welcome. Now I’ll close with my customary signing off phrase:

Later days,
Nico
