Oneonta’s Next Mayor

Dear readers,

Many times in this blog, I’ve expressed concern for the state of downtown Oneonta. Call me an old fogey, but the downtown I recall in my youth and even in my high school days is a far cry from downtown today. While there are many fun shops, including two recently-opened locations, I still see empty storefronts which seem to taunt me as I walk by. If downtown is the smile of Oneonta, it’s missing a few teeth.

Now, the last time I expressed this concern, some of my fellow students angrily and loudly disagreed with me, as is their right. So don’t get me wrong, I’m not belittling the town nor am I getting down in the dumps. I’ve spent my entire life in this town and wish more than anyone to see it thrive and prosper.  But loving this town does not mean that I think it has no problems.  As stated, downtown development is a problem.

The time has come for ordinary citizens to have a say. A lot of us, myself included, have been supporting local businesses with our spending power. Now, we can select a mayoral candidate whose visions for Oneonta most closely match our own. Today’s Daily Star announced that Hartwick’s former President, Dick Miller, will seek the mayoral position. He joins Republican Erik Miller (my alderman, coincidentally), Jordan Shepardson, and SUNY Oneonta student Jason Corrigan. Presumably, more will enter the race as well.

I’m not going to make an endorsement yet. That requires more research, more thought, and a careful consideration of the consequences of my actions. Here’s my request to all of you: If you’re a faculty or staff member, remember to check your voter registration and vote. Students, if you’re of age and can do so, register to vote in Oneonta. Yes, the next mayor of Oneonta will affect you too. If you want to live in your Greek house or get an apartment off campus, this affects you.

Simply because former President Miller is running does not obligate you to vote for him. Vote based on your own research!

Later days,
Nico
