I’ve Got The Gavel

Last night, the gavel held by all Vice-Presidents of Hartwick’s Student Senate was passed from Joanna, this year’s VP, to me. I’ll try not to incorporate it into my everyday life. Can you imagine how weird that would be? “I’d like to call this dinner to order.” or “I make a motion to take a shower”. Teehee!

I can tell that this weekend is going to be crazy. I have three finals on Monday! One would initially think that that’s insane, but think about it. Only two of those finals will be exams, and I bet none will go the full three hours. There are also some advantages of having Monday finals: being totally done as of next Tuesday! Then I have an online summer course at SUCO, which I hope will teach me stuff and result in an excellent grade.

At these busy times, I am struck by how much of an overachiever culture we live in. Everybody is struggling to get an assignment done and done well. Folks lose sleep as all-nighters become common because professors keep piling on the work. Students, who have been raised thinking that A’s are the only acceptable grade, get angry when older professors, who still think that a B means that the student has met all course requirements and is thus sufficient. Yikes!

Remember to relax!
