A New Start

Hey everyone,

I’m currently sitting in the library listening and watching all of the incoming freshmen meet with some faculty members. I’m wondering why Student Senate couldn’t be included in all the info that the new students are being given. I know my freshman orientation period felt like a big information dump! Making new students aware about Senate, our role on campus, and information about running would allow Senate to begin earlier in the fall, meaning that we can do even more stuff! Isn’t that cool?!

In order to begin earlier, we’d also have to speed up the Hall Council election process, for some of our senators, perhaps even half or the majority, come from Hall Councils. This would involve talking to the Resident Directors on campus and seeing how they can help us. So much preparation to accomplish such a tiny modification! Ah, nothing gets me going like bureaucracy!

Students have been ferried in and out of here all day. So many students, and they all look the same in that they have that “I’m new here” look about them. But the paths they’ll take here will diverge wildly! It’s quite something, I tell you. Some will transfer or drop out after a semester here, some after they finish their freshman year. Others will stay here and get involved in sports, or clubs, or in their major. I may be unknowingly looking at some future club leaders right now!  I’ve got very high hopes.

I wonder exactly where my blog fits in, or all Hartwick blogs for that matter, in this new student process. If new students are out there and are reading this, please run for Senate! I wonder if the PR on-campus for these blogs are as high as could be. I mean, I don’t see them advertised. Really, I just want to feel useful. I like helping people, you know?

Well, that’s it for today. Let me close by noting the death of actor David Carradine. Kill Bill is one of the movies that someone always has on long Hartwick bus rides. It’s topped only by The Boondock Saints. I can honestly say that, whenever I’ve gone on a bus ride with a Hartwick group, I’ve watched that movie.

Later days,
Nico
