Oh the Weather Outside is Frightful

Can you already believe it’s Autumn? I couldn’t tell what season it was by the weather. Why is that? Because it has been snowing up here in Oneonta for the past two days and it is flurrying outside as I type. I was a little surprised this year that it got so cold so quickly outside. I feel like we skipped right over autumn and went straight to winter. Any thoughts on when the first accumulation will be?

We are now finishing up the first five weeks of classes. At this time, professors are asked to evaluate students’ performance thus far. You are then marked in the following manner:

S = Satisfactory. No action required, keep up the good work!
M = Mixed signals, you may have missed assignments, missed classes, or performed poorly on graded work, including exams. Speak with your instructor immediately!
F = Inadequate performance, you are currently averaging a grade of D- or F. Speak with your instructor immediately!

These are sent home to parents, especially if you have two M’s or an F.

The evaluations allow students to see how they’re doing and it’s an early indicator of whether or not you should take advantage of tutoring if you haven’t already, or if you need to meet with your professor to see how you can improve your grade.

I like to think of these as progress reports I used to get in middle and high school. My progress reports had numbers that corresponded with comments. So, for example:
24 Student practices hazardous lab techniques
86 Student is a pleasure to have in class

I only once received the hazardous lab techniques comment because for my senior gym class our teacher let us choose the comments for our progress reports. My parents were confused as to why I was having labs in my gym class.

Anyway, I’m off to SUNY Oneonta soon to attend a play with a friend. I hope it’s entertaining/interesting.

Have a good day!

Dominique

This is the Last Fall

Happy Fall Everyone!

It’s that time of year where the weather cools down and the leaves change all sorts of beautiful colors. I always love this time of year, especially in Oneonta because you can see the trees for miles and miles and the hills just look beautiful. I believe that next weekend is the best weekend to photograph fall foliage, for anyone interested.

Well this year is off to a busy start, since it is not only my senior year but I am also Student Senate President. Basically this means I’m busy non-stop for roughly 15 hours a day every day. I think a lot of people have this misunderstanding that we college students are just like Asher Roth and that we love college in the same sense that he does. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, Google Asher Roth’s “ I Love College” and you’ll see what I mean. But in actuality students are busy little bees and seniors especially are running around non-stop. Just the other day I received a letter in the mail saying that I am eligible to graduate. That’s pretty awesome, but I’d be concerned if at this point I wasn’t eligible to graduate.

These past few weeks have been rather hectic for me, getting ready for Student Senate meetings, setting up meeting times and getting ready to write my thesis in the spring. As a triple major and dual degree candidate, I opted to combine my Political Science and my Philosophy theses into one. As for my ISP Photojournalism program, I am going to do a senior project centered around Arnold Hall and it will consist of pictures of the building and memories that everyone has of it. I’ll have pictures of before it was torn down, what it looked like inside, as it was being torn down and now the garden that rests on top of the foundation. I think it’ll be an awesome project. I’ll probably complete that in January Term into Spring Term so I can devote most of my time to my thesis.

Well I’m a little hungry, so I’m going to cut this short. I hope you get a chance to take a moment and look around at the beautiful scenery because in a short period of time, it’ll be gone and we’ll be covered in white stuff.

Have a lovely weekend,

Dom

Live a Little!

Hello Everyone!

I apologize for the long lapse in posts, life gets so hectic sometimes! Since my last post, I ran for Student Senate President and won the election so now I have more on my plate smile. I am so happy to have been elected though, since now I have the opportunity to make sure that students concerns are heard and I can enact change in any way I can.

All this summer I have sold my soul to baseball. I took an internship here in Oneonta at Damaschke Field as the team photographer and I have spent nearly every waking moment at the field. I have met some wonderful people and gotten to know more about baseball and the players then I ever thought I would. I took the internship because I knew next to nothing about baseball and I have never attempted sports photography and thought it would be a perfect adventure for me. It’s been the best summer ever! The team here has been in first place for their division all season and while it has rained more than any normal summer, which has caused us to pull tarp over the field on a near daily basis, the games that are played here are great!

How does this relate back to Hartwick? Well, thanks to our internship coordinator, Melissa Marietta, she was able to bring in the general manager of the team to talk about the many opportunities available in minor league baseball and while I was neither a marketing, business or accounting major I still went to the presentation to see what I could learn. I met and spoke to the general manager, who informed me they were looking for all kinds of people and to submit my resume. I already had one on hand that I had worked on throughout the year with Career Services and was able to hand it to him. If it had not been for Career Services, I would never had thought about minor league baseball as something I would be interested in. Now, I’m thinking about being a minor league baseball photographer as a career.

In the end, all I’m saying is take chances. Reasonable ones. It’s something I’ve been trying to do and since you only live once, why not. Now I’m learning to appreciate baseball and might even love it by the end of this year. Not so much major league, but minor league. I’ll work on Major League. I’m surrounded by Yankees and Red Sox fans, so I’ve been watching the games after work.

This summer has forced me to come out of my quiet shell more than I would have normally. Thanks to Career Services smile

I know it’s hot out (finally) but stay cool!

-Dominique
