TV, Wikipedia, and the Cognitive Surplus
So the art of the lecture is dead, eh? Check out this fascinating 15 minute video from author Clay Shirky, who spoke recently at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Fransisco. It’s based on his book Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing Without Organizations, which I recommend highly. Shirky makes some provocative observations about the ways we spend our time, and the ways we might in the future.

Career Advice from an Unlikely Source
The May 2008 issue of Outside magazine arrived today, and it includes a really neat guide to “The 50 Best Jobs” and also “The Best Places to Work.” It’s an unusual place for such info, but the guides are actually pretty interesting. The job guide interviews people with cool jobs and asks how they got them-- examples include blogger, race director, and sustainability director.
Among the companies rated the best places to work is Google, coming in at #2 among large companies. Employees at Google’s Mountain View, CA headquarters enjoy three free meals a day, a state-of-the-art fitness facility, a concierge to get you tickets to shows or whatever (!), and free transportation to and from work on the GBus. Of course those folks work long days. (In case you were wondering, #1 is New Belgium Brewing Co. in Fort Collins, CO.)
The first person who stops by my office (Bresee 312C) and asks can have the magazine. It’s fun (and inspiring) reading.

Fall 2008 Internship in Global Business
I know this is a bit early, but a global payroll company is looking for an intern for the Fall 2008 semester. Ideally the intern will have a good GPA, strong knowledge of Excel, and will have completed the junior BUSA sequence.
Contact me (dalrymples@hartwick.edu) for more info if you’re interested.
